This education group is for coaches' personal and professional growth, with a focus on skill building in soliciting feedback, giving feedback well, receiving feedback well, and doing something meaningful with it. The central ethos of the group will be a commitment to being radically honest and deeply kind at the same time.

Giving and receiving feedback is so much part of our coaching journey (when delivering to clients, as well as when we are learning with and from one another), but do we do it with the true power and finesse of which we are capable? The basis of this Education Group is the importance of giving feedback skillfully as a professional competence for coaches (Direct Communication). However, my vision for this group involves giving and receiving extensive feedback to and from one another within the group, and using the information to change something, whilst at the same time building our feedback skills. This allows for personal growth... as well as skill building in soliciting feedback, giving feedback well, receiving feedback well, and doing something meaningful with it.

We each bring our own growth needs and challenges to the group and then clarify and work on them in co-coaching. We ask for, give and receive feedback on our coaching, but also on the wider personal growth themes that we bring, as well as our presence, our voice tone, our body language, and more. If you want to go deep, aim high, and learn much, this could be a group for you. At each meeting, I shall introduce a specific feedback theme, skill or approach, and we shall explore and practice it together, putting ourselves right into the heart of the conversation with our peers and to explore how we both give and receive feedback.

Please make absolutely sure that you have understood that this is not a conventional feedback training and practice group. It is not focused only on giving and receiving solicited feedback on observable coaching skills. It also explores unsolicited feedback, things that are hard to say and hard to hear, and holistic, intuitive, irrational responses to one another, with the opportunity for profound inquiry into how we show up in the world and the difference we make to our clients and others around us. My hope is that we shall grow as coaches and more broadly, as people, through our participation.

Key Learning Points & Benefits for Participants:

  • Grow personally as well as professionally, gain skill and resilience in seeking, giving and receiving feedback
  • Be radically honest and deeply kind at the same time (with ourselves, with our clients, with each other)
  • Improve your coaching skills, especially Trust and Intimacy and Direct Communication (CCEs in Core Competencies will be applied for)
  • Community, peer friendship and deep bonding

Experiential Learning Through:

At each meeting, I shall introduce a specific feedback theme, skill or approach, and we shall explore and practice it together, putting ourselves right into the heart of the conversation with our peers and to explore how we both give and receive feedback. This is mainly experiential and exploratory.

Meeting Logistics:

There will be an in-person launch event for this group on Saturday, February 1, from 10:30am to 2:30pm MT. This will be an intensive workshop-style meeting with a shared potluck lunch in a private home in Denver or Boulder. The launch event will be followed by 10 monthly online meetings of 75 minutes each, on a Friday morning. The online video conferences may include 1:1, trio, and small-group sessions.

We shall have up to four further in-person meetings during the year, with dates and times TBD in consultation with the group. In addition, group members are encouraged to stay in touch on a dedicated Basecamp space*, and to meet in person for self-organized co-coaching practice and feedback conversations in dyads, triads, and small groups, depending on geography. The intention is to create an ongoing learning team for 2020, with a commitment to our own and one another's coaching excellence and personal growth.

*Engagement on Basecamp between sessions:

  • We shall set up a closed group for those involved to share insights, questions and reflections.
  • Group members may also share resources in this Basecamp space.
  • There will be an automated regular check-in question set up for group members to consider and respond to.<
  • Open, transparent sharing will be encouraged.
